Mini Splits: The AC Solution For Homes With Radiator Heat

Radiator heat is not as common as it once was. However, there are a lot of older homes that were initially built with radiator heat and still have it. You might think that it's not possible to install air conditioning in such a home since there are no ducts to carry the cooled air. But actually, there is a type of air conditioner that tends to work really well in homes with radiator heating. It's called mini split air conditioning.

What is mini split air conditioning?

The term "mini" suggests that these systems are small, and that is basically true. There is an outdoor compressor, which is about the same size as your normal AC compressor. There are also air handlers that are mounted in the walls, and those are pretty small. They blow air directly into your rooms so you do not need ducts. Most homes will need one air handler on each story. So, with a two-story home, your mini split system would consist of one compressor and two air handlers.

Where do the air handlers go?

The air handlers are typically mounted high on the wall, near the ceiling. This way, they are out of your way and do not really interfere with furniture. You also don't have to worry about working them around your radiators.

It's best to put your air handlers in a central area. This way, the cold air they release will be more evenly distributed throughout your home. However, there can be some leeway. If the most central room is a bathroom or storage room, you may want to locate the air handlers elsewhere. An HVAC contractor can help you weigh the pros and cons of various location options.

Are mini splits energy efficient?

These days, it is more important than ever before to make energy-efficient HVAC choices. The good news is that ductless, mini split AC systems are energy-efficient and may even use less energy than standard, ducted AC systems. This is because you don't lose any coolness as the air travels through ducts. There is also little resistance for the system to fight against, which reduces energy use.

If you have radiator heating, that does not mean you can't get air conditioning. A central AC system with ducts is not always a great option, but ductless mini split air conditioning really can be. Talk to an HVAC company in your area to learn more about AC installation
