Should You Replace Your Central AC?

For some people, the decision to replace their central AC is made for them when the unit breaks down beyond repair. For others, a unit just keeps chugging along year after year so the question of when to replace becomes a bit more complicated. If you fall into the latter category, then the following guide can help you decide if your AC unit needs replaced.

Unit Age and Efficiency

An older unit isn't just more prone to expensive breakdowns and repairs, it may also be less efficient than newer models. If your cooling bills seem to be going up more quickly than those of your neighbors, then your older, less efficient AC could be to blame. Efficiency ratings have improved drastically over the last decade, so units older than that should be assessed carefully to determine whether they should be replaced. If your unit has been needing increasing amounts of repairs and its efficiency rating is well below the ratings of newer models, then a replacement is likely a better long term investment than many small repairs.

Refrigerant Leaks

Your AC should not leak refrigerant because it is kept in a closed system, so if you end up with a refrigerant leak on your older model AC then it is time to assess whether a replacement is a better option. Repairing a leak typically entails replacing the compressor as well, as this may be the only way to ensure that a future leak doesn't occur. Plus, you may need to replace refrigerant lines and have the refrigerant level topped, which also increases the repair cost. Often, this cost will begin to approach the cost of a new AC, which means it is more cost effective in the long run to get a new unit that is more efficient and doesn't have a leak.

Cooling Power

Our homes evolve over the years, and chances are if you have an older AC unit, then you also have an older home. New windows, additions, and the removal of walls during home renovations over the last decade or more may have rendered your current AC unable to keep up with your modern cooling needs. If your AC cools unevenly, struggles to keep your house cool, or leaves some rooms too warm while over-cooling others, then it is likely time to upgrade to a unit that is better sized to your current needs.
