Ductless A/C Maintenance Tips

Just as with any heating and air conditioning system, a ductless a/c system needs to be maintained as well. If you've never owned a ductless system before, you may not be aware of how to maintain this type of system. With proper maintenance, your system will run efficiently and experience less breakdowns, which means less repair costs to you. Read on for tips to maintain your ductless system.

Clean The Exterior Unit

The exterior unit of your ductless unit needs to be cleaned and maintained. Be sure the unit outside is free of dirt and debris, the fins are kept clean and there isn't any landscaping blocking the flow of air to the system. You should have a 12 inch radius around the unit that allows for air to flow freely into your system. Use a garden hose to clean the fins of the system, giving it a gentle spray down. Spraying it with a pressure washer or anything that produces too hard of water spray can damage the fins of the unit, which can cause issues with water flow. Be sure the power to the unit is off before you attempt to clean it. Keep the unit free of snow and ice, and keep the refrigerant pipelines clean as well.

Clean The Interior Unit

Clean the interior unit as well, which may accumulate with dust and dander. Turn off the power to the unit before you begin cleaning the interior unit as well. Open it up and clean the vent inside and out, then check the interior filter (at least once per month) and clean it as well. Check this filter often and clean or replace it as needed. Be sure you have enough clearance around the unit to allow for proper air flow. You need at least 4 feet of clearance around the unit, so don't place furniture or other items too closely to this unit.

Know When To Call A Pro

If you are experiencing issues with your ductless unit, don't attempt to make the repairs yourself if you aren't familiar with HVAC systems. You could cause more problems with the system that could end up costing you more money. It's best to hire a professional to take a look at your system rather than attempting to make any repairs yourself.

If you are not familiar with a ductless a/c system, call a professional service, like Universal Refrigeration, for help to maintain the system and to make any necessary repairs.
